Amazing what a trauma unchecked and unprocessed with lead to over time.

Tiger Woods knows. His wife, his fans, the world knows.

What made Tiger fall so far so fast recently?

Trauma.

When we have trauma’s in our lives that we don’t or can’t process fully- the kind that take the wind out of our sails in ways we can’t imagine - when we freeze up, move into emotional fight or flight and stare “deer in the headlights” into the eyes and souls of the people we love and trust the most, and still walk directly into that oncoming car, into what is unthinkable for our character, history and trusted persona, we need only look at what tipped us, when exactly we fell down the rabbit hole.

In Tiger’s case, I believe it was his father Earl’s death, May of 2006 (who had been ill with prostate cancer since 1998) that started his spool to unravel. Such a ripping up and away of the mighty father, friend, teacher, trainer, confidant and business partner, his anchor, that held his lifelong boat in sold waters and turbulent seas of his amazing, structured, practiced and disciplined life from childhood.

“My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply. I’m overwhelmed when I think of all of the great things he accomplished in his life,” Tiger, 30, says. “He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend.”

This kind of rupture to a person’s heart, psyche and soul fragments the best of us.

He didn’t turn to drugs or booze, gambling or food, hot cars or a fast life, he moved towards women and affairs of the heart, mind and time. Any of the others would have been the same, it’s just this road he walked on instead of the others.

Who can know the pressures and temptations of the lives of athletes and celebs as Woods? Only those in the same boat. Would you do better? There’s no way to truly know.

No matter what road away from pain or confusion he traveled, is it our business? I say, no.

We are all doing the best we can with what we know and how we can handle this thing called life.

My good thoughts go to Tiger and his wife, his family.

AMERICA, GET A LIFE

I hope America finds something good to talk about sooner than later and leave him alone. He bumped Michael Jackson from the headlines, someone else’s story of confusion and “human-ness” will be next. Is this really what we’re about? Really? Look in the mirror, since you won’t be on the cover of the tabloids. We all have stuff. Some just bigger than others.

- 2004: Phelps arrested for a DUI. He was 19, fresh off Athens.

- 2008: Olympic Athlete Extraordinaire.

- 2009: Phelps caught using bong/marijuana.

Role model Michael Phelps has so far emerged unscathed from the controversy created by the photo showing him smoking from a bong, with his sponsors still standing behind him. However, he still could face criminal charges if it’s determined that he was smoking marijuana, which shouldn’t be too difficult considering there’s a photo and Phelps has already confessed.

Right or wrong, Phelps is in the public eye and made a really bad choice.

This is an issue for plenty people of course, but moreover, for “celebrities”  - young, inexperienced in ‘real life’ celebrities - who have the money and connections, time and influence, and mostly no common sense.

Should have talked to his mom first.

A woman gave birth yesterday to eight babies, octuplets.

And, she’s single.

And, she already has 6 kids.

And, somehow doctors supported this months ago with medications to create another birth.

I can’t even say anything more about this.

Do we have a second right answer to help kids stay in and not drop out of school?

“Every 26 seconds a school age student drops out of U.S. schools.” I heard this on the national news recently.  Nearly 7,000 American kids drop out of high school every day.

Why?

What year is this? The “WE’RE NUMBER 1″ country in the entire world?! And, these are our current stats on our kids? What happened? What is happening? What will it take to change it?

Okay, let me get this straight.

The Wall Street Bailout means that people should and will and are going back into stores shopping for stuff they don’t need, spending more credit they can’t afford, before the ink dries on the bill.

Really.

Saw it on the news just now, Denver Channel.  Ole’ Perry says, “At work, we were talking about it, and they were saying that if it did pass, they would be willing to spend some money, because they were saying they felt more comfortable that the government had everything under control.”

So, Perry.

a) Who are they (who you will blame for your problems later)?  “. . . they would be willing to spend some money, because they were saying they felt more comfortable that the government had everything under control.” And, (clearing throat) “the government has everything under control?” What planet do you live on? Have you heard nothing in the past few weeks, months, years, decades??

b) Who’s going to bail you out when you realize, one more time, that you can’t afford all that stuff you don’t need? You don’t get to blame the government or “they!”

ARRRGGGHHHH!

This rant is from my friend Nancy in South Dakota.

Here it goes: Driving to work today, I heard on the local radio station that somewhere a man who was convicted of, I think it was child molestation, and will be serving time. Apparently, he told the Judge, this was not the first time he had committed such an act, and those of us in the general public will be able to read more of the grizzly details, who other victim’s might be in his forthcoming book.

I would hope that people will not/would not even think to buy such a book and put money into the hands of such a person. But knowing the American public, I’m sure folks will be eager to get their hands on it. This smacks of O.J. Simpson’s recent book, and begs the question, “Is it merely morbid curiosity, and if this is the case, what is wrong with this picture??”

Did he?

At 23, and a natural athlete most of his life, 12,000 calories-a-day-Phelps can, evidently, afford all the fat and sugar his body can injest, while he keeps up his swimming. Seeing past photos, he’s always been slender too. That’s great. But… is he being a bad role model for millions of kids around the world with his new fame and sponsorships who’ll want to walk in his size 14’s?

Why not Speedo and rubber dome swim caps and goggle companies?

Why not something athletic and healthy? Or, a health company for exercise and good food?

Didn’t he talk this all out with “mom” before he decided? She’s a school principal for heaven’s sake, she absolutely can’t not know the issues of kids and nutrition issues.

I don’t know why, but maybe he does. And, maybe there is a silver lining in this that with all that exposure he’ll be hooking into it some “get off the couch kids and be more like me, even if you eat all this food that’s not so great for your age” motivation.

I hope so. I like him and all the athletes just fine and want them to win, win, WIN more of course.

Shawn Johnson did the same. McDonald’s is all over her “official website.” Go figure! Well, that’s just one of the issues. The “figure” will “go” with lots of high fat and sugar foods.

I know that rock stars, sports and other “role models” aren’t responsible for anyone’s lifestyles and choices, what they do or don’t do, but for busy moms and decision makers in the home who have to deal with kids and their peers and their wants, it gets old.
